On 8 8, the Multilingual Cultural Publishing and Communication Cooperation Initiative officially launched at the Beijing International Book Fair. Representatives from more than 30 publishing houses, translation associations, and digital dissemination platforms across 12 countries signed cooperation agreements to build a bridge for cross-language cultural exchange. Guided by the core philosophy of "Connecting the World through Translation, Reaching Hearts through Culture," the initiative prioritizes high-quality translation, joint publishing, and multi-channel dissemination, charting a clear path for Chinese culture to go global and for mutual learning among world civilizations.
This collaborative framework combines professional depth with broad reach, featuring four publishing pillars: Literary Classics, Contemporary Scholarship, Children's Books, and Intangible Cultural Heritage. It spans diverse media formats including print books, audiobooks, ebooks, and short video interpretations. Driven by both content and channels, it embodies the vision of "bridging through translation, connecting through culture," fostering shared prosperity among readers across languages and building a new ecosystem for multicultural coexistence.
Since the partnership proposal was initiated in 2025, comprehensive preparation work has proceeded smoothly throughout the year. In February 4 of 2026, the inaugural publisher consultation meeting was successfully held in Frankfurt, attended by nearly 100 editors and translation experts from participating institutions. Prior to the event, multiple thematic workshops addressed diverse topics including translation quality standards, copyright trading mechanisms, and overseas distribution channels. At the launch ceremony, the organizing committee clarified that the "Multilingual Cultural Publishing and Communication Cooperation Framework" will serve as the core deliverable. Anchored on three pillars—premium translation, joint publishing, and multi-channel dissemination—the initiative will implement three concrete projects: a classic works mutual translation program, a young translators support plan, and an overseas digital communication matrix. These efforts aim to strengthen China's capacity for international cultural communication and advance cultural publishing cooperation from fragmented trade toward systematic collaboration.
Choosing to deepen collaboration at this node carries significance for both our era and civilization. As a major publishing nation rich in cultural resources, China offers abundant content supply and an increasingly mature translation workforce. Meanwhile, all participating partners bring extensive local distribution networks and established readerships. Together, they can fully unlock the practical benefits of cross-language collaboration, creating real pathways for cultural exchange and mutual learning. Currently, all involved institutions are advancing book selection, translator matching, and copyright negotiations, while building multi-level platforms for coordinated editing and translation efforts—welcoming global readers to share in the beauty of diverse cultures.
Global cultural exchange still faces challenges such as language barriers, limited distribution channels, and cultural discount. Multilingual publishing, as a core vehicle for bridging linguistic divides, plays a critical role in deepening international cooperation. This collaboration aims to establish an equitable, consultative, and mutually beneficial publishing platform that fosters consensus and coordinated action. We will focus on key areas including translator talent development, digital publishing innovation, and precise engagement with overseas readers. By producing high-quality works, we aim to energize cross-cultural communication and build an open, inclusive, diverse, and shared global publishing ecosystem—injecting lasting linguistic strength into the exchange of world civilizations and the construction of a global community of human culture.
